Is there such a thing as addicted to social media? I confess, that I am connected to various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, WordPress, Tumblr…am I missing anything else?), but I wouldn’t entirely say that I’m addicted to it. There’s a recent article from Business Grow that says a study was conducted in University of Chicago that found social media to be even more addictive than alcohol and cigarettes. I am a fan of being connected to the internet, and yes — in fact, when you do Google my name, I will pop up! Have I done a good job creating a brand for myself? I don’t know. I know I can do better. Like a lot of people, I am just a mere participant of this trend. I love staying connected, seeing what people are up to, knowing what they have to say. The experience is instantaneous, and I’m always informed.
There’s also a downside to this addiction. Do you sometimes find yourself not being able to have a conversation with other people in a physical level? Do you sometimes feel awkward facing another human being face to face? Has the virtual world made you incompetent to enjoy actual human contact? If the answer is yes (even to one of the questions), you need help! To my experience, I rarely sign on to my accounts when the weekends roll around. Sometimes, I can go a few days without checking in. It’s actually a good practice I found liberating, and I suggest you do the same.
